About Copyrights: A Copyright protects original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other works. The Copyright Act generally gives the owner of copyright the exclusive right to reproduce the work, to prepare derivative works based upon the work, to distribute copies of the work, to perform the copyrighted work publicly, or to display the work publicly.
Securing Ownership: Copyright vests upon creation. So to ensure that copyright ownership ultimately belongs to you when contracting an author, programmer or anyone to create/assist in creating potential copyrightable material for you, it is usually necessary to have the contractor sign an appropriate contract acknowledging your ownership, such as a Work Made For Hire Agreement and/or Assignment.
Advantages of Registration: Registration of a copyrighted work is a prerequisite to a lawsuit for copyright infringement and to certain legal remedies. While registration may be obtained at the time of creation of the work or thereafter, a copyright registration existing at the time of infringement can entitle its owner to more damages.
